FDA announces new sunscreen rules

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced significant changes to sunscreen products that will help consumers decide how to buy and use sunscreen, and allow them to more effectively protect themselves and their families from sun-induced damage.

NICE guideline process earns international praise

An editorial published in the US journal Annals of Internal Medicine 7th June 2011 reviews the UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines for prevention of delirium. The US Institute of Medicine (IOM) has proposed a series of standards that should be met by all guidelines in order for them to be considered ‘trustworthy’ by clinicians. This editorial describes the NICE process as coming “close to meeting the IOM's rigorous definition of trustworthy”. The journal plans to publish future NICE guidelines to aid their dissemination to a wider audience. NICE guidelines relating to dermatology can be located here.

In this review the effects of nutrients on skin condition, particularly their potential to influence or improve skin barrier function, is explored. The ingredients of the dairy product include borage oil, green tea, vitamin E, and the probiotics Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, and Streptococcus thermophilus.

Extensive long-standing chromomycosis due to Fonsecaea pedrosoi: three cases with relevant improvement under voriconazole therapy

This is the first report with a case series of chromomycosis treated with voriconazole. It concludes that, despite its high cost, voriconazole is a safe and possibly promising drug for use on extensive chromomycosis refractory to conventional treatment.

Ezogabine

The FDA approved Potiga™ (ezogabine) tablets on 13th June 2011 as an adjuctive treatment of partial-onset seizures in adults. Partial seizures are the most common type of seizure seen in people with epilepsy. Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which there is abnormal or excessive activity of nerve cells in the brain. Partial seizures affect only a limited or localized area of the brain, but can spread to other parts of the brain. Seizures cause a wide range of symptoms, including repetitive limb movements (spasms), unusual behavior, and generalized convulsions with loss of consciousness.

Outside of the US, ezogabine is known as retigabine (brand name Trobalt™), and received marketing authorization in the European Union on 28th March 2011.
